4:45 PM. Hosur Road was just recuperating from a stressful morning rush hour and there was a semblance of sanity about the Baap Of All Roads!
Sanity is an attribute you can seldom associate with Hosur Road and it ceased to exist this monday evening. At around 5 PM, it seemed the whole of Bangalore was on an exodus to Hyderabad. Space-time froze again and all the drivers became extremely "Horn"y :-)
I should have expected all this; after all, India is the land of a billion cricket fanatics!! And missing India in action in a world cup final is tantamount to disservice to the nation!! And what a match it promised to be; India beat England,South Africa and Australia in the previous three matches and were on the threshold of lifting the world cup after a 24 year hiatus.
India Vs Pakistan - The World Cup Final!!!! It just cannot get better than this!!
May be I was dreaming; May be the whole of India was dreaming!! Dreams are a luxury you ill afford on Hosur Road; Reality bit us very quickly and it was a nightmare near BommanHalli :-)
Sports they say is that theater of human emotions where only unscripted drama rules; It surely did in the last 2 weeks in South Africa.
We were old, slow, meek, ugly, predictable and boring a few months back when we were knocked out of the biggest tournament of the game in the very first stage!! It was definitely not a shock - we had professional actors in the team who considered cricket a side business and we had Munaf Patel who believed that diving on the field amounts to blasphemy :-)
The show dragged on and the tournament lasted for a few more months in remote grounds where the players out numbered the ground staff and the audience combined :-)
A fortnight ago, to give India a chance in the 20-20 world cup would have been like expecting to see Rajesh Khanna driving a 1000 CC bike in Dhoom 3 :-)
I think Dhoni and his boys hardly cared if anybody gave them a chance; India rose like a phoenix from its own ashes in the last few weeks to script a spectacular ascent to the finals.
Back to Monday. In the race against time, I lost by 15 minutes and Yousuf Pathan was out minutes after I reached home.
For an hour, it seemed the Indian batsmen had it under control; It was like the calm before the Yuvraj Storm. Yuvraj, in sublime touch took batting to heights unattainable in international cricket; He batted as if he had been waiting for a decade to play in the 20-20 world cup.
Umar Gul, with the look of a breed of dog I cannot name, almost spoiled the party for India before young Rohit Sharma played as if he was batting on a Mumbai street after school hours to take India to 157.
I felt it was enough and for a moment, Imran Nazir made me believe that it was just a figment of my imagination. He continued from where he left off in the previous match until Robin Uthappa showed why India, beating all expectations was in the world cup final. With fire in their bellies, Dhoni's boys played like possessed fighters, there to prove a point. Noo..they were doing much more than that; it seemed they were having the best times of their life there - youthful exuberance unseen previously in Indian cricket.
Franklin D Roosevelt, the legendary US president said that Fear is the Only thing we need to fear about; And fear was conspicuous with its absence in the Indian contingent as it put reputations to rest.
Shahid Afridi, a 23 year old for the past 7 years was out the first ball and everyone thought it was the end of the road for Pakistan. Misbah Ul Haq at the other end was busy calculating moves, runs and balls with unmatched precision to take the match to the wire; Dream Finish to a Dream Final! :-)
Joginder Sharma prevailed and phewwww...we WON THE WORLD CUP!!
9 PM - I havent seen scenes like that in Bangalore before and dont expect to see in the near future.
Cricket truly galvanised India once more!!.
Dhoni And Team....YOU ROCK!!
CHAK DIYAAA INDIA!! :-)

wah Raghu .. good observation ...:)
like ur style!! nicely done!!
It is good, but Sorry buddy, not to ur standards :(
read this and lemme knw if it was really "chak diyaa india"...
http://www.ibnlive.com/news/what-should-i-do-for-recognition-asks-advani/49509-5-23.html
http://www.ibnlive.com/news/indian-hockey-cries-foul-on-crickets-big-day/49413-5-23.html
nationalism shudnt be just confined to cricket buddy...reading this article i feel the newspaper headlines hud read "chak diyaa Indian cricket team ne" instead of INDIA...coz cricket isnt the only game india plays...
I was a die hard fan of indian cricket..but yeah articles like these made me realise how pathetic other sports are in india...
I wud write "chak diyaa india" when India betters its tally of 1 bronze medal in each of the last three editions of olympics...or when other sports are treated at par with cricket...after all we are 1 billion people rite??? 1 bronze sounds too difficult to digest...atleast for me....
@BJ
Historical, sociological and physical characteristics of a people lead them to be associated very deeply to a game. A major part of Europe and Latin America is obsessed with football as India is with Cricket. So if you are talking about people appreciating sportsmen, I think its just simple appeal!! French people in general may not be as happy if their team wins the Hockey world cup as they will be on winning the football worldcup; and nobody should have a problem - at the end of the day what matters is did YOU have fun??
If you are talking about the step-motherly treatment meted out by the govt and the sport bodies, I cannot agree more with you. Its pathetic that guys like Advani and hockey players are not getting their due!
But you cannot deny that T 20 was a Chak De moment - a moment which brought smiles to millions of Indians and made us immensely proud!
hmmm...i am not really against u or anyone as a matter of fact for being ecstatic at india T 20 win...
but prob is...not many india dont even know wht games we play other than cricket..but wht u said..french get happier when they win the football world cup...but they APPRECIATE other sports as well..not tht u wudnt knw...but france plays the rugby world cup..and is not a pushover at all...they have a french open..and quite a handful of tennis players..
and they fare well in olypmics as well..i mean they have a fav sport that they die for...but tht is not the end thr....they support other things well...
and probably the best example of the word CHAMPIONS might be australia...ruthless in cricket...world champions in both men's and women's hockey(i think the dutch won it this time..but in genl they are the top side)..not many beat them in swimming...made it to the 2nd round of football WC..and lost out only to a controversial penalty thr...but still u knw wht the fav game of australia is..it is RUGBY...and they are one of the favs in the WC thr again...and there is one more sport thr..which ppl are crazy abt and it is AUSTRALIAN RULES FOOTBALL...its a mixture of football and rugby...
so wht really hurts me is to see indians not supporting other sports at all...narain karthikeyan is more known to non indians than indians...and thr is saying tht more ppl fly to moon than drive an F1 car...when small and financially suffering countries like ghana..togo...ivory coast..ethiopia..serbia etc make a good name for themselves in 2-3 sports atleast why doesnt india with one billion people doesnt manage to produce a bunch of ppl who can win something other than cricket...and the problem is leave alone the govts and sports authorities...the public dont watch other things...its a simple case of demand and supply...ppl dont watch other sports..so media doesnt focus on it...so no sponsors..and hence arises the first scene in "chak de india".."na koi sponsor hai na darshak hai na media"...wht he uttered was painful but true...
i dnt know why i am telling u all this...but all i want is for ppl to watch other sports as well(atleast when india plays) and encourage other sports which will in turn get sponsors or media to focus on non-cricket sports...coz if this continues for long...i can see a "talent drain" on lines with "brain drain" happening in indian sports..i wudnt be surprised if sportspersons leave for other countries to get recognition and i wudnt hold them wrong as well...coz wud u encourage ur brother or friend or anyone to take up a career as a boxer or swimmer or footballer in india...not many do...so i hope i dont live to see such a pathetic situation....
and ya...sorry u have to listen to more shit from me...regarding ur "associated deeply with a game" comment...i have no authority to change any person's likes or dislikes...but why do we support cricket and cricketers inspite of all the stupid and selfish things tht they do and give a blind eye to others who tend to play for the country or atleast pretend to...for example...few of the really shameful things i heard of in cricket...
1. dhoni after scoring 2-3 centuries coming out and saying "not even a single company has come out to give me an offer of an ad though i hav scored 2-3 centuries.." (dhoni was 2nd to ponting in the ICC world batsman's rankings..) and his first endorsement was MYSORE SANDAL SOAP....
2. tendulkar asking the govt to exempt him of the 1 crore tax on his ferrari tht he got as a gift...
1 crore surely shud hav been a small amt for tendulkar
3. the newly formed ICL...when the board (BCCI) wants to spot and harness talent tht will bring glory to INDIA...and when they have so much nationalism flowing in their blood...then wht problem wud they hav with guys joining ICL...it definitely develops competitive spirit and hence wud be better showcase of the talent tht we have...why shud they threaten players saying players who play for ICL will never be selected in indian national team...but no..they dont want ICL to grow just because they wud lose money...so if a player performs superbly in ICL will he still be given cold treatment and not taken to national team??where does all the patriotism and nationalism go then???
As u cud observe,I am most of the times am harsh towards cricketers but I just wud love to see them given the same significance as other sports now...and then see if the cricketers can rise upto it...
I am sorry that u had to listen to all this shit...but I am trying whatever I can to make people aware of other sports and create sort of equality in sports...so if i cud get to make atleast 2-3 ppl aware i wud be really happy...coz hockey or cricket or even kabaddi...the country that plays is same..OUR INDIA...sorry once again if i hurt u in any sense...
@BJ
I understand why and what you are saying..and I am really happy there are so many people like you who think about the equality of sports!! I seriously wish people in the sport bodies and the govt think in your lines..and help India become a force to reckon with in many sports..
But when you talk about people supporting other games..I again say its driven by how much you are associated with those games..."Koi darshak nahi hai" is actually an outcome and not a reason!! U just cannot expect somebody to watch India loose..loose and loose in football..and you just cannot expect people to actually see a game for the sake of it - I mean I think its in the Indian psyche that we do not consider superiority in sports as a show of national esteem!(U see we never were good players in most games..and we dont even have a GOD for sports!! :-)..I feel we never were really interested as a country in sports).
But I strongly agree we should take other sports more seriously..and the onus is on people who are passionate about the game and on the concerned sport bodies..and no matter how much we brag about the cult status for cricket, I feel its just the appeal which is going to rule..and after all, we are not communist(Thank God for it!! :-)) that we will show only a particular sport to develop interest in people!!
U havent hurt me at all..and in fact I enjoyed reading your comments :-)
hey thnx...tht really made me feel gud...i was feelin tht for ne reason at all i was venting all my frustration in ur blog...hmm...i hope we become a force to reckon with....we were quite good in the beginning actually...world champs in hockey...even qualified for the football world cup in 1954 i guess..if i am not wrong...not many ppl knw tht...but we did qualify for the football world cup...we were invited actually...not qualified..but we didnt play in it...as the players didnt have proper footwear..i mean in india ppl used to play barefooted and hence didnt play the WC...i knw it sounds really stupid...but tht happened...
hmm..so feels gud to knw tht u didnt feel bad abt my comments...and fact tht u felt ggod only makes me feel better...thnx for ur patience and appreciation...:)
Yupp..I knew both these things happened...but its time India looks forward, takes its sports seriously and win something big in the coming olympics..and how refreshing it will be!! :-)
